The ancient druids were the original goths, long before dark eyeliner and dyed black hair. They believed the wren was a bird of augury, a soothsayer, a ouija board with wings. The sound of the wren's chirps and cries foretold future events; the direction of the bird's flight revealed omens. Thus the wren symbolized both wisdom and divinity. When we work in the vineyard we attempt to decode the wren's hidden message -- it's probably something about when to harvest the pinot.
